DEVELOP SCHOLARS TAKE WORLD TO STUDENTS

NASA DEVELOP Scholars visited six Wise County High Schools in celebration of Geographic Information Science Day recently sharing with hundreds of local high school students the advancing technological wonders of modern mapping as a part of the annual GIS/GPS instructional outreach event.

Wise County NASA DEVELOP Scholars partnered with Mountain Empire Community College’s National Science Foundation funded program and MECC Distance Education to advance GIS into local public schools with multiple 30-minute power point presentations and demonstrations of Wise County’s GIS on-line capabilities largely built by local GIS students the past six years.

The 2006 class of Wise DEVELOP scholars have multiple projects that they are doing ranging from updating the existing 100-layer GIS map to their most recent projects of a remote sensing study of Wise County’s atmosphere for aerosols and new highway development based on traffic safety factors using geographic information science and global position system applications.

Students have either completed or will complete the Mountain Empire Community College GIS Certificate taking 7-courses over various semesters while completing community projects. DEVELOP Scholars enhance their skills via MECC Distance Education with  applied learning at the Wise County Clerk of Court real estate deed recording office.

Students are required to take courses in GIS, GPS, public speaking, environmental law, meteorology, astronomy, and other science, mathematics, technology and independent research courses during their respective tenure.

Undergraduate students involved now are: Denise Issacs (UVA-Wise), Jennifer Maggard (MECC/UVA-Wise), Andrew Tunnell (MECC), Jacob Adkins (MECC/UVA-Wise), Alex Boggs (MECC), Lloyd Jones (MECC), Sheila Hamblin (MECC), Susan Tipton (MECC), and 2006 NASA Langley Summer Research Scholar Amanda Smith (MECC/UVA-Wise).  Students are mentored by Adjunct MECC professor Melanie B. Salyer and Jessica R. Swinney, Wise County’s Geographic Information Officer.

Over one hundred high school, college undergraduate and graduate students have participated in the program since inception in 2001 with most completing a MECC GIS certificate to enhance their varied subsequent careers.
