In 2006, as a part of the county’s sesquicentennial (150-year) activities, Clerk of Court associates created a digital database of church formations from 1856 through mid-2006.
Church formation is a court process whereby the judge appoints church trustees to hold the real estate of the denomination. While the documents provide a somewhat incomplete view of the religious history of Wise County, it does form the basis for further research and academic inquiry.
The database permits queries of church names, trustees, dates of formation, and a view of the associated and available file documents based on chancery court documents.

Utilization of the database is FREE as a part of the history preservation effort of Wise County.
Special recognitions for the project are given to Jacob Atkins, Denise Isaacs, Jennifer Maggard, and Dr. Thomas Costa of The University of Virginia’s College at Wise.
Genealogy information may be obtained through the Wise County Historical Society.

The Geographic Information Science Department is now managed by Jessica Swinney. The Clerk of Court endeavors to ensure that real estate parcels are properly mapped for subsequent map inclusion as rapidly as possible. The GISci Department may be contacted at 328-7110.

The Clerk of Court cooperates in providing data to MIXNET Corp. so local subscribers may access the real estate document images from 1970 to the current year. The remote document subscription ExtraNet access has been provided since 1998 by Mixnet's eFile.
Land document subsribers may also use the FREE GIS database to locate parcels in one browser window and bring-up the documents associated with that parcel in a second browser window.
